Using Rust-Oleum Noxyde On Metal Cladding

The Specification

Metal cladding is a surface that is extremely common on commercial properties, farm buildings & factories up and down the country. While cheap and durable, making it a popular choice of exterior finishing, metal sheet cladding can be susceptible to wear and tear. This is especially the case with metal cladding that has been left untreated for a long period of time.

A recent project was carried out by North West Roof Cladding Coatings, who were tasked with recoating a large industrial unit in Bamber Bridge, to reinvigorate the building. The specification was carried out using Rust-Oleum Noxyde, which is a single pack water-based elastomeric coating that has unrivalled anti-corrosion properties.

The metal cladding before the paint was applied

The commercial property in question had been discoloured and weathered, leaving it with a tired exterior that was undesirable to the client. Rust-Oleum Noxyde was selected for the specification as it comes with a 10 year manufacturer warranty from Rust-Oleum, thanks to its 200% elastic coat that means it does not crack or peel. This exceptional durability is the reason why Noxyde is the paint that is specified for thousands of exterior metal projects every year, which also included Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Working closely with North West Roof Cladding Coatings on the speciation, here at Decor8 Northern we were able to help provide technical assistance for the project, from site monitoring to specification development. We were also able to liaise with the client to secure the 10 year manufacturer guarantee with Rust-Oleum, which can only be done through trusted partners of Rust-Oleum like Decor8 Northern.

The Process

The team at North West Roof Cladding Coatings selected the Tritech T8 from the project, purchased through Decor8 Northern as we are a certified Tritech Main Dealer. This is the top-spec airless spray machine in the Tritech range, making it perfect for large industrial spraying such as this project.

Before any spraying could commence, the metal cladding was suitably prepared ready to be painted. This included making any repairs to the cladding, as well as cleaning the full surface down to remove any contaminants.

Rust-Oleum Noxyde is a primer and topcoat in one system, with the two coats applied. While the specification was for a grey coloured finish, a green first coat of Noxyde to the building first. Separate coats of Noxyde are always applied in different colours to ensure that the correct film build is created on each coat. This also helps to ensure that both coats are applied to the same coverage, as the opacity of each coat must be enough to achieve the desired finish.

Once the first coat was completely dry, the finishing topcoat in the desired colour of the client was applied. The results were exactly what the client had requested from the project, achieving a new, pristine coating to the building while also ensuring that the metal cladding was protected from weathering and corrosion. On completion of the project and following a site visit, the 10 year warranty was issued, ensuring the long-term performance of the product.
